Old Soldiers Just Fade Away

Well it's been a long and joyous journey since I was a Guest Author and then Administrator for this long running Dancing In The Dark Weblog. But like all good fortunes, like the Chinese Yin and Yang, all must come to an end to begin a new Change. "Old soldiers do not die....they just fade away" as the saying goes. The long ride took a lot of time and effort to gather info and photos and to publish them on this Blogsite but it was for my personal enjoyment to share any news about dancing with the dancing community. But now, it's time to climb off the saddle and bring this journey to an end for this successful Dancing In The Dark Weblog on May 31. I thank Joe Martel who gave me the reigns to continue Dancing In The Dark, and a big Mahalo to my Guest Authors and all those who contributed articles to be published on this Weblog. They have been a source of encouragement for all who are in the field of dancing, be it Social Ballroom, Latin, Swing, Country Line, Hula, Tap, Hip Hop, Mardi Gra, Contemporary, High School Musicals, Exhibition (Showcase Dancing), ContraDance, etc. A big Mahalo, too, to the Readers/Dancers who approached me personally to say, thanks for sharing the news about dancing events. Aloha to all and Keep On Dancing to the Beat!

Dance To The Music of The 50's and 60's with WASABI

This is our first major fundraiser to benefit Aliamanu Middle School and Dance Hawaii(aka Dance Aliamanu).

Wasabi is a live band who plays 50's-60's music! When they take their breaks, our own Music DeeJay, Andy Pascua, will continue to play dance music that will keep you dancing the night away!

So if you got the hots and shoes dat's burning for non-stop 5 hours of dancing, com'on down to the Aliamanu Middle School.

Aiea Ballroom Dance Assn. 55th @The Palladium

Like EmCee Kay Yahiku announced at the Aiea Ballroom Dance Assn. 55th Annioversary Ball .."We're here to have fun!" And fun it was for the wall to wall dancers who came to celebrate one of Hawaii's oldest and probably the first ballroom dance organization still in existence for over half a century. Kay (now she is good at it and really gets around being EmCee for different dance club's events) got the program going with introducing Presidents of the various dance clubs in Hawaii who were in the audience. Earlier, this dynamic little lady had gone around asking dancers to volunteer to start the ice-breaker dance "Snowball". She got more than 20 couples (including Lani and me) to happily participate.

President Deanie Bates of Aiea Ballroom Dance Assn gave a warm welcome speech. Then it was time for the "Snowball" dance. It was a good icebreaker theme but a little too short in time dancing (maybe because I was having too much fun).

There was no Exhibition Dancing on the agenda but many showcase dancers were present just to enjoy dancing socially...Calvin & Debra Ota, Jackson Cho & June Choong, Ed & Matilda Felix, Kay Yahiku & Warren Sargeant, Glenn & Tracey Okazaki, Tom Sutton & Hami Draper, Edwin & Charlotte Bugarin, and the Salsaman Gregg Henry to name a few.

However in place were Hula and Tahitian Dancers complete with drum players that gave a well received entertainment. It was different from the norm but it was a good fit.

Trailing next was door prizes consisted of large gardenia potted plants, box of candies and glass vases that were issued out to the lucky number winners. Our numbers weren't called but Debra Ota who was one of the lucky ones gave Lani her gardenia plant. Thanks Debra! Incidently FYI, Calvin and Debra will be competing in the Senior Standard and Senior Latin division at Blackpool, England this month.

I gotta thank Maurice Morita, President of Dance Hawaii for the tickets to this event, and Rudy Luat, President of Pan Pacific Ballroom Dance Society for bringing the tickets to the Palladium. Thanks, guys! Speaking of tickets.. EmCee Kay also acknowledged Herbert Omizo and Annie Ferguson for their faithful support to this Anniversary.

While I'm at the acknowlegement genre, the guys and gals at the reception table (above photo) and the "kitchen detail" are not forgotten. Their friendly smiles as they greeted each dancer at the door with a lei, and flower ornaments for the ladies was a new and a neat gesture.

The warm bento passed out by the "kitchen detail" (above photo) was delicious. And the slices of assortment fruit pies from New Aala Bakery (Arthur & Joan Oda) was an ono touch for refreshments. The 55th Anniversary Committee also did good in making this dance an enjoyable event.

There's an old saying that "music can move the soul". I believe that is true 'cause every selection of music that Tad Fukumoto played last night had the dance floor filled with dancers. How good was his dance music? I'd say one of the best and good enough that Tad and partner Sarah were on the floor dancing more often than previous DeeJays on the job. Now dat's having fun dancing! General dancing continued on till 9:45.

IBDI & DANCE HAWAII LAS VEGAS SHOWCASE

Just got this e-mail from Maurice Morita on the IBDI & DANCE HAWAII LAS VEGAS SHOWCASE. Just some tidbits on the successful joint venture of these two dance organizations. Hopefully, Jimbo Johnson will shed more light on this event in Moanalua Corridor......

The first IBDI & Dance Hawaii Las Vegas Showcase was successful. We met our goal of 100 people with 114 people attend at the Sam's Town Hotel & Casino on Thursday night, May 13th. The performers for Dance Hawaii (Richard & Lynn Nakamura; Larry Arinaga & Candace Yap; Maurice & Gilda Morita) and IBDI (Ernie & Karen Choy; Roy & Marsha Ninomiya; Ed & Candy Matsuda) doing the JIVE and choreograph by Richard & Lynn Nakamura did a very good job according to the people attending.

Dance Hawaii wants to thank ROY HAMASAKI for being our host with Vacations Hawaii. Everything went smoothly and without any problems.
In behalf of IBDI & Dance Hawaii, we want to thank all who attended who supported this event for the first time, and for the performers who represented both chapters. You can be proud of the performers.

Profiling "So You Think You Can't Dance"

So you can't dance because you think you got 2 left feet! No big deal...at least there's no other incurable impairment hanging on your shoulder. This past Spring Session was sort of a challenge for Lani and me. When the Kaimuki CSA left a note in my mailbox that an interpreter will be present in our dance class at Ali'iolani CSA, my first thought was...oh! oh! a student who couldn't understand the American language. That's no big deal since we've had students who I had to coach more often than others in our dance classes because of the language barrier. But this time, it was a young lady who is hearing impaired acquired since she was very young. She had no regular dance partner. So I had my son Dean partner up with her. He's single, a good dancer and motivator, and carries a good sense of humor. Well, it turned out that this young lady with hearing impairment breezed through the course better than some of the good fortuned students. I think it amazed some of the men students because they danced with her when we took short breaks during the two hours. The interpreter did a good job with the hand sign language, also, moving along with the LOD. I asked my son Dean, "How does she do it with her handicap being able to dance so well?" He replied, "She listens very well (through the interpreter) to whatever you and mom say, she feels the beat of the music when she's dancing, and is keen to my lead." Did she stay on course the full 10 weeks of lessons on the Waltz, Rumba, Tango, and Jitterbug? No...she stayed for 9 weeks being absent only on the 6th week. Okay, back to "I can't dance because I got 2 left feet"...as long as you can feel the music, transfer weight from one (ahem left) foot to the other (like walking), and feel your body moving to the rhythm....you can dance.....even with two left feet.

Dance Hawaii Social Dance and Upcoming Events

SOCIAL DANCE ON SATURDAY, MAY 8TH (MUSIC DJ-ANDY PASCUA)
Thank you for the 50+ people who came out last night to our Social Dance. We collected $89.00 that will benefit the Radford High School Athletic Program. We want to thank Ray & Lolita Nariyoshi (Cha Cha) & Creighton & Beverly Goo (Rumba) who danced solos on their recently Panama Canal Cruise who showed us what they did. It took courage for them to dance their solos so we appreciate their cooperation. On another note, starting with the next school year, the student athletic fees to participate in a sport will go up from $50.00 to $100.00. Hope this will benefit the students who cannot afford to pay the player's fee. Next Social Dance is the 4th Saturday, May 22nd from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Radford High School Cafeteria. The Music DJ is Mike Chinen.

The Aiea Ballroom Dance Association-Hawaii will be having their 55th Anniversary on Saturday, May 22nd, at the Ala Wai Palladium. From 5:30 p.m to 6:30 p.m., they will be serving their bento. Dance and Program will begin from 6:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Cost is $7.00. If you want to attend, please see Maurice or Jim Brierly.

The FRIENDS OF ALA WAI will be having their Anniversary Ball on Saturday, May 29th, at the Ala Wai Palladium. I hopefully will be receiving tickets for this event and will be for sale at our dance classes. Please see Maurice or James Brierly for tickets. More information will be forthcoming.

The Sugino Dance Academy will be having their annual "Goodwill Dance Festival" on Friday, May 28th, at the Pacific Beach Hotel from 6:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. There will be performers from our Dance Hawaii (aka Dance Aliamanu) Club, such as, Lester & Henrietta Muramoto, Derek & Keiko Oh, and our Dance Routine Group from the 2010 Las Vegas Showcase. Social Dancing @Radford High School

Dance Hawaii (aka Dance Aliamanu) hosted their first Social dance for the month of May this past Saturday at Radford High School. It was the first time for Lani and me to attend the social since we joined the instructional staff for Dance Hawaii. A good crowd of more than 50 dancers came to practice their skills in Ballroom, Latin, and Swing dancing.

Even had some Filipino Tango, too. Andy Pascua brought his selection of danceable music and I gotta say they were tops and his audio system cranked up the best of the best sound, yet. A couple of my students (Charles and Claudia) from the Ali'iolani CSA were there, too, and they were enjoying the dance, the people, and the ono kau kau.

Joe Martel (publisher of Let's Dance magazine) came by also and made it fun dancing with some of the ladies. Lani says, "Joe is a good leader and dancer!" (Catch Joe's comments on his blog at Moanalua Corridor).

It was nice to see and dance the Rumba with Sally Forges since she got back from Vegas. She still got the Latin moves. And so does Monica Pascua if you ever can get the chance to dance the Cha Cha with her. And don't let Jo Cassidy looks fool you..she can sure swing with the Triple Steps.

Anyway it was a night to have fun dancing to the rhythm and let loose. Next dance social is scheduled for the 22nd of May...then followed by the big band sounds of the 50's and 60's by Wasabi on June 5th at Aliamanu Middle School.

CSA Summer 2010 Session Dance Classes

Just incase you didn't receive my e-mail on what's in store for our Summer Session, here's the schedule for the three American social dance classes. Most if not all of you had already learned the Beginner's Waltz, Cha Cha, and Tango from Lani and me or from our son Nick. Since this session is scheduled for only 6 weeks, Lani and I have decided to teach the Intermediate level dance steps in the Waltz, Cha Cha, and Tango and because many of you have requested it in the end-of-course evaluation. Lani and I will review with you some of the Beginner's patterns that will prepare you for the Intermediate level on the first night. As with all our past dance classes, we'll continue to make it fun to learn to dance.

MamboMania on Centerstage

It was HOT MAMBO today (Tuesday) at the Ala Moana Centerstage featuring the colorful Step*Taculars, a wonderful cast of energetic ladies who are proving that senior age is no barrier to "I can do it!". Not in the vein of Ballroom and Latin dancing but more of Line Dancing in the style of Broadway stage dancing....very good entertainment that brought loud applauses from the many spectators.

I got there nearing the tail end of the performance but in time to catch Ron Reddick tap dancing, Bill Doherty and Barbie Paris doing a Latin skit, and the finale with the whole cast dancing some Carmen Miranda Latin moves wearing awesome headpieces.

Good to see Ron still hoofing it and (Guest Author) Salome still a shining beam among the other lovelies. Bill Doherty is still an amazing genius in costume design as you can see how bright and eye catching the colorful custumes the lovelies and he are wearing.

Missed most of the show but if you like entertainment and stage shows ala Mardi Gras, the Step*Taculars perform on the first Tuesday of each month from 12 to 12:45PM at the Ala Moana Centerstage.

SOCIAL DANCE AT RADFORD HIGH SCHOOL ON 2ND & 4TH SATURDAYS

Looking for another venue for dancing with good danceable music this weekend? Here's one you might want venture to.............

If you haven't join us at Radford High School Cafeteria on the 2nd & 4th Saturdays, there will be a Social Dance this Saturday, May 8th from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This is a good time to practice your dance steps, meet other people from our other dance sites and from other dance clubs. We do ask for monetary donation (usually $1.00 to $5.00) that is donated to the Radford High School Athletic Program, and to share a pupu dish during our break (around 8:15 p.m.) to energize yourself with the delicious pupus dancers bring to share with everyone. Dance Hawaii provides all of the eating supplies (plates, napkins, spoons, paper plates/bowls, coffee, hot tea, and water).

We have three Music DJ's who volunteer to play our dance music for you to enjoy: Andy Pascua; Mike Chinen; and Paul Lee.

The Big Island Ballroom Dance Club 3rd Anniversary Ball (Saturday, May 1st)
We really enjoyed the Big Island Ballroom Dance Club 3rd Anniversary Ball this past Saturday (May 1st) at the University of Hawaii-Hilo Campus Cafeteria. It was a nicely planned event with decorations to make the cafeteria a very nice place to dance. Our own, Josh Manzano & Jill Tengan did a beautiful solo "Night Club 2 Step" and the Dance Waipahu High School Club did a group routine dance that pleased the crowd. Good Job to Josh & Jill! Chaperones were Eddie Olegario, Club Advisor at Waipahu High School along with Lorna Manzano (mother of Josh) and Grandma Rose Manzano. Besides dancing the night away, the members took a tour of the island.
Other members who attend were: Gilda Morita and Eileen Nakano. HBDA out of town guests were Nobu Oshiro; Jan & Ron Matsuura.
Our hosts were Carol Tokuda and Stanley Okinaka along with instructors, Mildred, Wayne Leong, Leslie & Hiroko Takayama, etc.

Anniversary Balls, & Goodwill Dance in May

So far for the month of May, Aiea Ballroom Dance Association have their 55th Anniversary scheduled for the 22nd at the Palladium. No other info except starts at 6PM, music by Tad Fukumoto, and light refreshments at breaktime. Friends of The Ala Wai also have their anniversary scheduled for the 29th (no other info available at this time). Goodwill Dance Festival at the Pacific Beach Hotel hosted by Sugino Dance Academy and Joann Yasuko Dance Center on schedule for the 28th.

Out of the hundreds of dancers at the USA Dance 17th Anniversary Ball, what's the chance of someone tapping you on the shoulder saying, "I recognize you from your photo. I'm KI"? KI, as you recall is the person who posts the Palladium monthly schedule of events on the Web which is a great service to all dancers. Mystery solved and a big Mahalo to KI.

USA Dance 17th Anniversary Ball

Lani and I got to the Palladium a little before 7PM and met Richard and Lynn Nakamura as we made our way up the stairs to the ballroom. Herbert Omizo (this guy really gets around) stopped to say hello as we entered the doorway. As assured by friend Debra Ota, our tickets were waiting for us at the table.

Anne Nakamura, (who with husband Stanley and Lani and I were in a small group of dancers that use to do the hunts for dancing some years ago) handed me the tickets. Anne was at the reception table with four other lovelies greeting incoming dancers.

The ballroom was heated up with dancers burning the floor to the fabulous music collection of DeeJay Gary Kawasaki. As Lani describe each selection...just superb, the best we've heard in a long time. It was "turn on music" that had a good balance of International and American tempo. But before swinging on to the dance floor, we stopped to welcome back Debra and Calvin Ota who returned from the USA Dance National Dancesport Championship at Los Angeles.

Mean while the hard working "kitchen crew" was busy getting the light refreshments ready for intermission time.

EmCee for the evening was Kay Yahiku who got the program underway. Gotta admire this gal who has EmCeed for other dance clubs, also. She's sweet looking with a clear voice and a good command of the program that it moved along without any hitch. President Glenn Okazaki got on the mike to welcome everyone with a thank you for attending this event. A short recap and announcement of the dancers who recently competed at the USA Dance National Dancesport Championship in Los Angeles.(More info about the "Championship" by Calvin Ota in Town Dancer blog). Acknowledging the presence of Presidents of other dance organizations followed. Trailed by recognition of Herbert Omizo and Annie Ferguson for their continued support for USA Dance.

The "HorseShoe Ice Breaker Dance" got a lot of dancers on the dance floor...who could resist the tempo of the timeless Waltz. Calling of lucky numbers for door prizes was also on the agenda.

Ravi Narayan filled in as DeeJay for Gary to keep the program going.

The Exhibition Showcase started with Ari Delbert and Prita Narayan (Diamond Head Shooting Stars) dancing the Cha Cha choreographed by Synthia Sumukti (mom to Prita). It was refreshing to see two young people dancing in this showcase. They certainly made a good showing in dancing the Cha Cha. Ari had good posture and balance and Prita displayed good form that made their Cha Cha fun to watch. Their journey have just started and we hope to see more of them in future showcases.

Fresh back home from the USA Dance National Championships, Calvin and Debra Ota showed their precision character in their performance of the International Tango. Whether it be the International Standard or Latin, this couple never cease to please the audience with their excellence in Exhibition Dancing. Tonight, their rendition of the International Tango was DYNAMIC! Certainly, a big treat to watch Calvin and Debra with championship quality perform in this showcase.

The performance of the Salsa/Rumba Medley by Gregg Henry and Emi Matsuoka was truly electrifying. Rarely do we see cabaret exhibition dancing at the Palladium. This Medley showcase was purely a big treat, also. Hot Salsa moves and death defying lifts...Gregg and Emi brought excitement, entertainment, and a new dimension to Exhibition Dancing at the Palladium. Dat's Dynamite!

Closing the Exhibition part of the program were Glenn and Tracy Okazaki dancing the International Waltz. It was good to see Tracy back on the Exhibition circuit dancing with Glenn. Also back from the USA Dance Championships, Glenn displayed his championship forms as he lead Tracy effortlessly around the entire dance floor...very beautiful International Waltz techniques by both dancers.

Light refreshments was served on the lanai by the "kitchen crew" and then back to more general dancing till 9:30PM.

Camera..Lights..Action

Well, tonight is the big shindig for USA Dance 17th Anniversary at the Palladium. Of course there's another dance brewing at Radford High School hosted by Dance Hawaii starting at 7PM. Got my camera and ready for the action. Hopefully, the big whips of USA Dance Hawaii have taken the hints that Geoffrey Fells and I have tossed out in our blogs that the lighting in the center of the ballroom needs more illumination especially for Exhibition Dancing. We shall see tonight if the "master of the light switch" will use his magic finger to brighten the whole ballroom during the Exhibition showcase.

Hidden in the dark corner of my SD card were some under exposed medias of the Iolani School Dancers' performances at the Ala Moana Centerstage. Just a little touch of enhancement did the trick to make them reasonable enough to post them on the blog. I gotta add that one performance had a bit of tap dancing but mostly high flying dancing and a lot of high kicks. Anyway, check out the photos of these angels without wings. They may turn out to be future exhibition dancers.

Iolani School Dance Showcase

That was an awesome showcase that the Iolani School Dancers performed this past Sunday at the Ala Moana Centerstage. Hip Hop to Jazz to Contemporary..the girls ranging from about eight years old to high school age did them all. There were a lot of aerial leaps as well as a lot of close to the floor dancing. The 45 minute show which featured over 15 performances went like clockwork as each performance was stringed one after another without any pause. It was very crowded and SRO at ground level but this grandpa was there to enjoy watching his two granddaughters dance. All the dancers were smartly dressed in colorful costumes and with make-up that made even the younger dancers looked matured. A wonderful and entertaining showcase performed by the very young, preteens, and teenagers that received loud applauses. (Just a few photos taken of the performance).

The long awaited evening for the 35th Anniversary Ball finally came. Got my dancing shoes, my trusty paparazzi camera, and my main squeeze to the ballroom in plenty of time to pick up my tickets that Matilda Felix had reserved and to also pick up the bentos. Bentos had already been dished out as Lani and I stepped on to the second floor lanai....but no ticket, no bento.

Picked up my tickets at the reception table where an old friend, John Calleon with Luby, Eric, Sawaye, and Ed were greeting the dancers. There were other greeters, too, at the door..George, Lucy, and Helena (who was passing out ball point pens). More familiar faces at the Bento table..Herbert Omizo (this guy really gets around just like Annie Ferguson), Marie Perreira, Louise Fujiyama, and Amadeo Verzon. I gotta tell you Pan Pacific Ballroom Dance Society has class when it gets to serving bento. We were surprised to see decorated tables with flower arrangements and chairs set up for comfort. Bento included white rice topped with a slice of luncheon meat, chicken steak, fish cake, and a small Okinawan donut.
Rudy Luat came to chat with us when we were having our dinner. Boy, that guy has got a mind like a steel trap...he remembers people we both knew in the 60's when we were in the Hawaii Air National Guard. Rudy was in the 199th Fighter Squadron and I was in the 169th AC&W Squadron. Well so much for the good old days but you gotta know this....Rudy is a good conversationist.

A lot of dancers were on the dance floor as Lani and I scanned the room for a good seating area. Matilda was taking care of playing the dance music and updating the chart that informs the dancers what the line up of dances will be. There must be a purpose for the chart!!?? General dancing went on till 7:45 then President Rudy Luat gave the WELCOME message. Shortly after Daniel Iki took over as EmCee for the evening. First on the agenda was the calling of Lucky Numbers for door prizes....the flower arrangements...., recognition of other dance club's presidents and Pan Pacific Ballroom Dance Society officers. Herbert Omizo was recognized for his continuing support for the Club. General dancing continued with Eric and Luby Brienzo substituting as DeeJay for Ed and Matilda.

Then a little after 8 o'clock the first Exhibition dance took place with Ed and Matilda dancing the International Tango. Now this couple has always performed very well in the International style and tonight they were at their very best. Good technique and strength and very disciplined as they danced the entire length of the Ballroom.

Next on were Romeo Cabras and Tessie Pascual soon after with a rare treat in the Filipno Tango. This style of dancing is finding its way into our dancing community and Romeo and Tessie danced some good moves to show that it will remain on the dance scene for a long time. A little touch of Latin gave the dance some punch and it was clever of the dancers to remain in the middle of the Ballroom so everyone could enjoy their rendition of the Filipino Tango. Well done, Romeo and Tessie, and I hope you'll be invited to perform for other dance clubs, too.

Speaking of "punch", the Tango Mix was a dynamite performance by Simon Escano and Aida Ancheta. Their "mix" had such passion and emotional moves that their Tango may very well change the picture of Tango Exhibitions in the future. No doubt, their Tango Mix was a "Thriller" with the sweet taste of entertainment.

Bruce and Yoko Wee concluded the dance exhibition part of the program with the Argentine Tango. Here was another good performance that made the "Thriller" meter go ding. Lani said, "they were soooo good!" A lot of eye contact between Bruce and Yoko made their dance of love and hate more realistic and very enjoyable to watch.

Refreshments and snacks followed with cake and pastries from Aala Bakery thanks to Arhur & Joan Oda.

Dancing with your heart !!

They challenged their members to give with their heart and what a response it was !!

The fundraising dance for the victims of the Haiti earthquake held on Friday, March 26, 2010 at the Ala Wai Palladium brought out the best of the ballroom community in Hawaii. It was jointly organized by Pan Pacific Ballroom Society of Hawaii and USA Dance Honolulu. In what may be a record-breaking charity fundraiser by the ballroom community, a total of just under $6000 was donated to the International Red Cross that night. A total of $4505 was raised by the time the program started. With another $1000 donation by USA Dance Honolulu and additional donations by members, this number had hit close to $6000 by the end of the evening.

The program consisted of a Waltz horseshoe followed by solo performances by Ed and Mathilda Felix, Calvin and Debra Ota and Glenn Okazaki and Anne Ho with the finale Tango formation by Pan Pacific.

Donations were accepted at the door and 100% of all ticket sales were donated to the International Red Cross. Aala Bakery generously donated the refreshments for the evening.

It was evident that the music was fabulous and everyone was having a great time since at 9:30 p.m., the floor was still packed. As the MC Roger Izumigawa asked, everyone gave until they felt good and felt so good they did not want to stop dancing.

Congratulations to both clubs for being an exemplary role model of working together and showing their heart to the Hawaii community.

Dance Aliamanu Fundraiser Dance

This may be a little early to post but tickets for this fundraiser to benefit Dance Aliamanu and Aliamanu Middle School are available for sale at all Dance Aliamanu dance outlet schools. I don't know much about WASABI (live band) but if their music are hits of the dancing 50's and 60's, it's gonna be a "great balls of fire" really swinging and bopping event. Good time to go down "romantic lane", too, with some slow "take me back to the Oldies but Goodies of the 50's". (Left click on poster for more info).

Dance Hawaii Kai-2nd Quarter

The long rest since we concluded the 1st Quarter with the Waltz and Rumba at Koko Head Elementary School did Lani and me good. Dancing on those hard cement floors two hours a night, four times a week can sure cause some "itai" moments. But now, we're all rested and back in the game come April 13th. During the last Fall Session and this Spring Session at our CSA dance classes, Lani and I let loose the Jitterbug. That "bug" bit our students into a state of Swing Fever. All three classes loved the upbeat tempo of the music and the freedom to express themselves in this "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing" dancing. So this quarter for Dance Hawaii Kai at Koko Head Elementary School, Lani and I will be letting loose the Jitterbug for our Absolute Beginners. And if they don't get bitten by the "bug", then maybe the Foxy Trot will get to them.

10 YEAR OLD WINS DANCE ESSAY CONTEST! was submitted by Rita O'Conner. The Valley Isle has gotta be proud that one of their young native sons has won this contest and found the passion for ballroom dancing..

Maui, HAWAII –Private Image Dance Studio sponsored a "Love Of Dance" essay contest (with three different topic options) to keiki & adults of Maui. Judges (from the mainland) chose Maui youth Sol Singer, age 10, as the winner of this year's contest! Sol received a gift certificate for a private dance lesson with Dance Professional Rita O'Connor, NDCA. Sol has been involved with the Ballroom & Latin Dance Program of South Maui Parks & Recreation Community Classes for less than a year!

Here is his winning entry:
"I love to dance. It is fun. Merengue is my favorite because I can do all these creative, complex moves with a simple step. East-coast Swing has some nice moves too. I look forward to learning new steps and hot dances at class. As I hear that music, that rhythm - I am overcome with the urge to dance. My feet start to heat-up with anticipation as I eagerly make my way to the dance floor. 5-6-7-8 DANCE! I am instantly filled with happiness. Everyone should learn to dance, especially my mom and dad who I love dearly. If I win the essay contest, I choose to gift the private lesson to my parents. ILIMA Ballroom Dance Club 27th Anniversary Ball

Got all duked up for the Ilima Ballroom Dance Club 27th Anniversary Ball at the Palladium last night. Got my ticket and got my girl Lani to the Ballroom a little after 5PM. A lot of parking space available but there were busy people at work upstairs in the kitchen as they prepared the evening snack of turkey (or was it chicken?)sandwich, fresh lettuce salad topped with dressing, and a good serving of sliced peaches. Diane Wong, President of Ilima Dance Club was there pitching in with the kitchen crew. There were the early dancers in the foyer chomping down their meal as they waited to enter the Ballroom. JoAnn and Betty at the reception table greeted us with a smile.

Dance music was already playing and a few dancers getting warmed up for the evening of dancing and the Showcase. Lani and I have been to a few dances hosted by clubs that teach only the International style. So we had expected, like the other clubs, to be only International style tempo. But not so with Dr. Wong's selection of dance music....slow tempo Waltz but the Foxtrot, Jive, Tango, West Coast Swing, Cha Cha, Mambo, Rumba, etc. were in tempo with the International and American style. There was also Merengue which is rare. Thanks, Dr. Wong! And also thanks to the Setup Crew (Club members and Ronald Kim & Robert Lai).

Now to the main event. EmCee for the event was Roger Izumigawa, a well known celebrity in the dance community, who kept the audience in tuned with the Dance Exhibition part of the program. Club President Diane Wong gave a Welcome message. Then Roger acknowledged the Presidents of Aiea Ballroom Dance Assn. (Deanie Bates), Aloha Dance Club (Gladys Lee), Friends of Ala Wai Dance Academy (Warren Mitsunaga), Gardenia Dance Assn.(Ivan John), International Ballroom Dance Inc. (Chris Jay), USA Dance Honolulu Chapter (Glenn Okazaki), and Pan Pacific Ballroom Dance of Hawaii (Rudy Luat) who attended as Ilima's guests. Also acknowledgement went to Herbert Omizo & Annie Furguson and the many individuals that helped with the ticket sales.

The Dance Exhibition started with Kay Yahiku & Warick Sargent dancing the International Foxtrot. There were some lifting in the dance as Warick twirled Kay about shoulder height that wooed the audience.

Nice moves by Hami Draper & Tom Sutton as they danced their interpretation of the International Cha Cha. We hope to see more of this couple in other showcases.

Aileen & David Hashimoto soon followed with the International Tango. Lani and I thought that David had full control of the dance as he masterly lead Aileen in the dance of passion.

Now every dance showcase has a THRILLER or two. But I gotta hand it to Charlotte & Edwin Bugarin for their performance of the International Cha Cha. They were there to entertain and please the audience with their terrific expertise in showcase dancing. In fact they were the only dancers who performed in the middle of the large dance floor so everyone could see and enjoy their performance. That's akamai Exhibition Dancing!

As a finale, there was an International SURPRISE Dance. It started as a skit with three guys arguing (Nancy Luckie impersonated as a guy) with no audio. Almost like watching the first black and white movie of the early 1900's. A lot of animation going on by Don Smith as Ivan John (dressed like a drag queen) enters the scene. A little confusing of what's going on at first but as the story unveils, Ivan John teaches the three guys (sorry I didn't get the name of the third guy but I'm guessing it was David Mayman) how to dance the International Tango. Maybe that's what the argument among the three guys were about. Anyway, Ivan got to dance with the three guys. No more arguments...just entertainment that got the audience a belly full of laughter. (I couldn't get a good photo of the group of Ivan John, Nancy Luckie and Friends but you can view Ivan John all decked up sitting on my friend Calvin Ota's lap in one of the photos).

So it turned out to be any evening of fine dancing and an entertaining showcase by the Exhibition Dancers. This photo pictures some of the dancers that were happy to be at the Ball. Hopefully, someone will remember to turn up all the lights in the ballroom when there is a Dance Exhibition. After all, the beautiful costumes and the expressions on the dancers' faces and eyes are 50 percent of the performance.

St. Paddy's Dance Party @Star-Struck Studio

"BRRRRRR! Baby, It's Cold Outside". It was a cold and breezy night last night. You know....da kine night bettah to stay in a warm and cozy home with a hot cup of java. But Lani and I were invited to the St.Paddy's Dance Party at the Star-Struck Studio. Couldn't disappoint the hosts John and Alicia Aros after saying that we'd be there. Lani and I got to the studio before eight. Salsa music was playing but only a handful of John and Alicia's students were there. We were greeted by John and later by Alicia as she entered the mini ballroom. Their two lovely children with their nanny were there also to enjoy the festivity.

As more students trickled into the studio, John and Alicia got the party started by demonstrating the Foxtrot and then had everyone on the dance floor to dance the Slow-Slow-Quick-Quick steps. The party got warmed up when more students came in. There were light refreshments and puu puus at the bar. For the adventurous dancers, there were Napa Valley nectars and the brews from hops.
It was a dance party so John and Alicia availed themselves to dancing with their students the Foxtrot, Waltz, Swing, Cha Cha. Tango, and the Hustle. And the students enjoyed that. I got to enjoy dancing with Alicia, too...the East Coast Swing and the Merengue. Had a few dances with one of their students, also. It was an enjoyable night for Lani and me as we danced the Waltz, Cha Cha, Swing, Rumba, and a bit of Tango before the music ended.

We met and talked to nearly everyone at the party. Most if not all were new to ballroom dancing but they were a friendly bunch just like the hosts John and Alicia.
The night had turned from "BRRR! Baby It's Cold Outside to Heat Wave" and was well worth braving the cold and breezy weather.

Flash Back To The 1990s

It was in the early 1990s when Lani and I joined IBDC (now IBDI) as dance instructors. Al Hashimoto was the Dance Director then and Masa Iwamura was the President. Masa along with Helen Koza were the Senior Instructors for the Club and also for the Kilauea Seniors Dance Club until they retired from teaching. Masa passed away recently and our condolence go to his wife Hollie and family.

There were "young guns" in 1993....the Exhibition Dancers for the Club...Bill & Vickie Kerfoot, Frank & Lani Sierra, Yvonne Miyamoto & Davis Muramoto who performed in showcases at the Sheraton Waikiki Ballroom, and at Student Parties. There were others, too, like then new student Steven Sambrano (2nd VP), and Grace Nohara (1st VP) who shared the winner's circle with DeeJay Henry Lee and Jane Taneguchi in the East Coast Swing dance contest at the 2nd Term Student Party. Latin Festival 2010

WOWEE! What an entertaining event it was at the Latin Festival this past Friday. Lani and I brought some of our dance students to the Big Dance. It was the first time for all of them to dance at the Palladium. We could see in their eyes the excitement of seeing so many dancers on a large scale floor. The Exhibition Dancing and the Mock Competition thrilled them moreso. Did they get to social dance? YES they did! But I think I'm getting a little ahead on this blog. Lani and I got to the Palladium a little before 5PM but we weren't the only ones. There were other dancers waiting in the foyer while the showcase performers and competition dancers were practicing their routine inside the ballroom. Bento was served while we waited to enter the ballroom. Light but not bad for 8 bucks including admission...rice, chicken katsu, hot dog, a piece of daikon, and a mini Okinawan doughnut. Coffee, juice, and water was enough to quench the thirst. I gotta thank the kitchen crew for doing such a good job in distributing the bento and serving those delicious cookies as refreshment from Old Aala Bakery. (Sorry I didn't get a photo of them).

As we entered the ballroom, we were greeted by Ivan John (President), David Mayman (Vice President), Rose Loui (Treasurer), Gayle Kawahakui and Nancy Luckie (Directors) at the Reception Table.

Before I go any further, let me introduce to you some of the members of Hawaii Gardenia Circle that made this event an enjoyable one...the EmCee, the Event Organizer, and the DeeJay.
General Dancing continued from 5:30 to 7:45. Then there was a Horse Shoe Dance before the Exhibition Dancing part of the program. I gotta note here that some of the big names in professional ballroom dancing attended this affair..Geoffrey Fells (Lani and I had a small chat with him. Hope his right leg heals real soon), Christopher Bayot, and Albert Franz.

Richard and Lynn Nakamura opened the Exhibition Dancing with the International Quick Step. These two dancers from Dance Aliamanu always amaze Lani and me with their energy and quickness in their footwork. Running on high octane and they are always a crowd pleaser.

The Night Club Two Step followed immediately by Joshua Manzano and Jill Tengan from Dance Aliamanu. They are the youngest dance instructors for the club and are going places. Very nice showcase moves and technique and very enjoyable to watch.

Concluding this part of the Exhibition Dancing were Dr. Michael and Trudy Uechi who danced an impeccable International Waltz and Foxtrot Medley. Very disciplined posture and footwork as they flowed smoothly throughout the entire ballroom floor.

More General Dancing followed before the Mock Competition. The Mock Competiton consisted of the Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Mambo, Jive, and Paso Doble.

The Parade of Latin Festival competition dancers opened the program in style with introduction of the dancers by the EmCee.

Participating in the mock competition were Robert Schiff, Rosy Schiff, Patrick Stanley, Geraine Luna, Lyn Sodaria, Gene Peles, Karin Peles, Tom Collins, Hana Yin, Daniel Ng, Stephanie Yueg, Calvin Ota, Debra Ota, Joshua Manzano, Jill Tengan, Edwin Bugarin, Charlotte Bugain, Renna Villanueva, Gordon Wong, Sergio Villanueva, Jana Makasobe, Stacie Jo Stanley, and Rosy Thomas.

The Latin mock competition was the best I've seen at the Palladium. It was HOT! HOT! HOT! as the dancers sizzled with every dance. The costumes the contestants wore were striking and added color to the dances. Since Latin dancing is a spot dance and doesn't do much travelling (except maybe the Samba), Lani and I could only see the dancers at our end of the ballroom. Did the dancers dance with passion in the Rumba? Was there a fierce matador in the Paso Doble? Were the dancers enjoying the dance? Did they dance to entertain the audence? Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! We were fortunate to have some of Hawaii's most talented dancers display their ultimate skills in the Ballroom and Latin dancing for one evening. Hopefully these talented dancers will be invited to next year's Latin Festival. This was an evening of fine dancing and extraordinary entertainment organized by Hawaii Gardenia Circle. Bravo!

Hi All,

We'll be performing a solo Friday night, March 12, at the Ala Wai Palladium (Ala Wai Golf Course bldg. 2nd floor) for Hawaii Gardenia Circle's Latin Festival and we hope that if you are free that evening, you'll be able to come out and have some fun with us.

The Latin Festival is a mock competition for the latin dances. We won't be participating in the Latin Festival but we will be performing before the mock competition begins. You'll enjoy all the performances and the mock competition.

at the recent IBDI Inaugural Ball at the Pacific Beach Hotel. Besides preparing for "Emotions", he is gearing up for a highly watched TV spectacular (more on this later). "Emotions" promises to be a highly charged evening of dinner, dancing, and special performances by the top ballroom dancers in Hawaii. Star-Struck Studio Dance Party

Star-Struck Studio is hosting a dance party this Friday. So dancers in East Honolulu, if you don't want to trek all the way to the Palladium for fun and dancing here's an alternative. This party came up fast! I wanted to get a count on who is coming as well as if you can bring any guests. This Friday's "contest" will be focused on guests... if you bring a guest you get an extra dancing dollar for each guest who comes AND another one if they enroll for dance lessons at the party! so BRING ON THE FAMILY and FRIENDS! the one who does bring the most guests will also get a special gift.

Promising to be another fun-filled event on Friday, March 12th at the Palladium, the new leadership of Hawaii's Gardenia Circle has worked with new enthusiasm to provide us with a social dance which not only promises to entertain, but also provides a good opportunity for local dancers to practice their dancing in a simulated competition environment, all without the stress of a real competition! So, whether you end up participating in the mock competition or not, whether you just want to go there for some general dancing and fellowship, or just to support the mock competitors, it is expected that you should come away from it having some fun.

IBDI Inaugural Ball 2010

I guess many of those who bought tickets to this past Saturday IBDI Inaugural Ball at the Pacific Beach Hotel were in suspense whether the Tsunami was going to hit Waikiki or not. Well Lani and I waited till 3PM for the alert to fade away which it finally did. We headed to the Pacific Beach Hotel early...got there about 5PM. A little early. No one was at the Reception Table, so we went moseying down to the shops to kill some time. Found a shop selling things at reduced price because it was going out of business and Lani wanted to try out her bargaining skills that she acquired on our trips to China. Yep! she got what she wanted at the price she bargained with the proprietor.

By the time we got to the Ballroom on the 7th floor, the lobby was filled with dancers. The "front line" reception table friendly workers were already busy collecting tickets and directing the dancers to their assigned tables. It was nice to see Dana Morey who with her late husband were students of Lani and me. Our first stop in the Ballroom was to wish our friends Calvin and Debra Ota the very best in the Paso Doble exhibition.

There were many dancers in attendance who Lani and I knew from way back when we were teaching for IBDC (now IBDI). General dancing was in full swing to the enticing music from the collections of Henry Lee with the assistance of Jane......not only International tempo music but a good number of American tempo also. General dancing went on for about an hour before the first wave of dancers were ushered to the buffet line. Emcee for the evening was Kay Yahiku who handled the podium with humor and a big voice. Renna Villanueva gave the invocation....then it was dinner time. (No need to hash over the buffet menu 'cause anyone who has attended functions at the PBH knows the entries are ono ono).

After dinner, the IBDI new officers for 2010 were introduced, and then installed by Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Peter Carlisle. Here's the line up: President: Christopher Jay, 1st VP: Grace Nohara, 2nd VP: Steven Sambrano, Secretary: Marsha Ninomiya, and Treasurer: Paul Araki. Board of Diectors: Shirley Igarashi, Arnold Lee, Edward Matsuda, Dana Morey, Anna Omizo, and Fred Tsuda. A President's Message by Christopher Jay followed and then a VIP dance and a SnowBall (aka Ice Breaker) before the Exhibition Dance. Somewhere sandwiched in between was the calling of lucky numbers for door prizes and the winner of the table centerpiece.

About 9 o'clock, Calvin and Debra Ota opened the Exhibition program with the Paso Doble choreographed by Albert Franz. Calvin wore a black Latin outfit and Debra dressed as a Flamenco dancer. It was what Lani and I had expected to see as Calvin and Debra scorched the dance floor with the inspiring passion, power, and strength of a matador facing a raging bull with his cape. And Debra as the "cape" shared with the required high level technical ability. A touch of Flamenco dancing and styling and the dance well performed by two seasoned dancers made it a terrific and exciting performance to watch.

What was billed on the agenda as Latin Medley by Dance Appeal Troupe (comprised of 13dance performers) did not happen but there was fire...Latin Fire.. in the performance danced by Sergio and Renna Villanueva. Boy, they were hot to trot as they covered the entire length of the dance floor with a medley of ballroom and broadway dancing. The blond wig together with the silvery costume that Renna wore sure gave substance to their performance. Dynamite and very entertaining performance by Sergio and Renna.

The International Waltz by Thomas Nakamura and Stephanie Uechi concluded the Exhibition Dance part of the program. Lani and I have seen Thomas dance in exhibitions and socially but this night, he performed superbly and smooth as butter with a lot of control. And as for Stephanie, the beautiful lines she displayed in her dance shows a lot of strength in her movements. A top notch International Waltz performance by Thomas & Stephanie and very enjoyable to watch.

The Hustle by Lucas Jaime & Ellen Osler, and the International Tango by Steven Sambrano & Shirlene Yuen never materialized. Maybe we'll see the performances at next year's IBDI Inaugural Ball.

The program as a whole was well organized. It moved along smoothly which allowed more general dancing. The night was still young and general dancing continued till closing. (Left click on photos to zoom in).

Palladium March 2010 Schedule

Dance Hawaii Kai @Koko Head Elementary School

Time really flies by when you're having fun teaching Absolute Beginners how to dance. Last night, was our 5th lesson on the Waltz and Rumba at Koko Head Elementary School. Not everyone attended but we had a good showing of students eager to progress to the next syllabus in the Waltz and Rumba. Instead of reviewing all the previous steps in the the two dances, Lani and I decided to teach a new syllabus first and combine it with the previous syllabi. It worked well with this group of students to form danceable combinations of patterns for the Waltz and Rumba.

WAM Fundraiser Dance & Showcase

Here's a blow by blow description of the fundraising event with special thanks to the many volunteers who made this a very successful event. Submitted by Guest Author Jill Tengan who is the Ballroom Dance Advisor to Moanalua High School Ballroom Dance Club and a dance instructor for Dance Hawaii, Inc. (formally Dance Aliamanu)

On February 6, 2010, the Waipahu and Moanalua High School ballroom dance clubs held their 2nd annual social dance fundraiser at the Moanalua High School cafeteria. The night began with social dancing from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Then, from 6:30 to 7:00pm, Cullen and Cheryl Chong led everyone in a mini salsa workshop, which the high school students really enjoyed. The workshop was followed by free dancing and light refreshments. At 7:30, the formal program began, leading off with the Waipahu High School ballroom dance club president, Nicole Mina, giving an informative speech on how their club got started and how they would use funds raised to perform in Hilo in May of this year. Waipahu performed a merengue group routine to Pitbull's "I Know You Want Me" using some creative formations and ending with a fancy pose. Then Lynn and Richard Nakamura performed a fantastically sophisticated international tango, followed by a contemporary night club two-step by Jill Tengan and Joshua Manzano. Kim Anderson followed with a powerful vocal performance of "All That Jazz," which was thoroughly impressive. The Moanalua High School dance club then followed, with Nicole Geiger, giving a heartfelt speech on the club's service projects and thanking her members for a memorable year. Then the Moanalua club performed a cheery jive to "Greased Lightning". Between these events, there were many items being raffled off, with a $50 gift card to Safeway as the grand prize. Finally, Charlotte, Edwin, and Jared Bugarin performed an excitingly hip urban chacha as the finale for the night. We concluded the program with awards for the performers and thanks to all the many helpers and donors from the dance community that made the night a success. Special thanks to Mike Chinen for playing a great mix of music, as always, to Maurice Morita and Cullen and Cheryl Chong for their support and assistance, to Lorna and Rose Manzano for their time and support, to Lynn Nakamura, Henrietta Muramoto, Nobu Oshiro, Richard Nieto, Charlotte Bugarin, Beverly Goo, Eileen Nakano, Barbara Troegner, Jovita Cassidy and Larry Arinaga for their help getting shoes for the kids, to all those who came to support the high school clubs, bought tickets, cookies, t-shirts, auction items, and who donated money, to Mrs. Geiger and all the parents that came to support their kids, to our talented guest performers (Lynn and Richard Nakamura, Kim Anderson, Charlotte, Edwin, and Jared Bugarin) for their time and effort in preparing for this event, to all the students who came early to help set up and to those who donated food for refreshments, to Mr. Ben Meyer and Mrs. Julia Toyama for opening and closing the cafe for us on a Saturday, and to everyone else who has played a part in our success over the years, we humbly thank you all and apologize for those who we might have inadvertently overlooked. You are all greatly appreciated!

2010 Valentine Ball

The City and County of Honolulu 2010 Valentine Ball was held at the Palladium last night and from what I could see, most of the 501.c dance clubs were well represented. This was an affair to be entertained and to enjoy social dancing on a night that the mythology Cupid is suppose to create a romantic bond with your main squeeze. There was a Cupid all dressed up in costume with wings and bow and arrow. It was none other than Tad Fukumoto who was also the DJ for the evening and guest performer.

MC for the event was Gladys Lee, a well known dancer in the community who handled the program with style and punctuality going according to the schedule. At her side was Steven Santiago who enlightened the audience with the workings of the Parks and Recreation programs and who also assisted in distributing the door prizes donated by the First Hawaiian Bank. Before the Dance Exhibitions, there was a Dance Mixer (aka Ice Breaker) coordinated by Rose Char, another catchy name in the dancing community.

There were five dance exhibitions...all in the International styles. Now the Palladium is not the best place to hold dance exhibitions or competitive dancing. Some how it doesn't have the same atmosphere as the ballrooms in the hotels. I gotta say that I agree with Geoffrey on this point. But for hosting social dancing, there is no better place than the Palladium.

Up first was "Cupid" Tad Fukumoto who danced a cartoon type International Jive with Sara Oyama. It took them a few minutes to get started but as both are seniors you gotta give them some leeway. I mentioned cartoon style Jive but Tad and Sara tried their very best to entertain the audience. Hopefully when they perform again, they will dance in the middle of the dance floor so everyone can see the performance. Tad and Sara's performance brought laughters and loud applauses and I gotta say that they did entertain.

Jackson Chao and Shu Wang were next to dance the International Waltz. I recognized Jackson by his black shoes with white stripes. He recently performed the Quick Step with June Choong at Al Franz Showcase. Shu has been a long time showcase performer and she still has the grit to continue in this field. Both danced smoothly in the Waltz.

Richard and Lynn Nakamura (Mr. and Mrs. Quick Step). This couple has been in so many showcases for different dance clubs that it amazes me each time of their quickness and high energy in their movements. The Quick Step is always a crowd pleaser and Richard and Lynn sure did please the crowd.

Sidney Chiu and Patricia Paliracio. I've seen Patricia dance socially since my days with IBDC (IBDI) but never in showcases. She has blossomed into a good showcase dancer. Sidney danced with such good control that their performance was enjoyable to watch.

Rarely do you see a husband and wife perform in showcases (except of recent maybe Calvin & Debra Ota, Richard & Lynn, and Paul & Marie Laderta). Closing the Dance Exhibition part of the program were Dr. Michael and Trudy Uechi who entertained the audience with their rendition of the International Foxtrot and Waltz Medley. It was a good combination and very well performed.

All the exhibition dancers were awarded with gifts at the end of the program.
Herbet Omizo was honored for Ticket Sales assisted by Ed Dunn. Then Door Prizes were given out to the lucky ticket holders which (ahem) I was one of the fortunate ones.

Waltz & Rumba Opens @Ali'iolani CSA

Last Fall 2009 Session Thursday night dance class was cancelled because of not meeting the minimum of registered students. This Spring Session, Lani and I are happy to be back with 38 students enrolled. 33 were in attendance for our first Waltz and Rumba class for the first 5 weeks. The Tango and Jitterbug class will follow after for the following 5 weeks. We had a good number of returnees and a large number of fresh younger students all ready to step into the limelight of ballroom dancing. After demonsrating the fundamentals of smooth dancing and Latin dancing at the beginning of each hour, Lani and I proceeded to teach the aerobic exercise for the Waltz for footwork conditioning. We did the same for the Rumba during the last hour. The Box Step, the Turning Box Step, and the Forward Progressive Step with the characteristic rise and fall were danced with smoothness as the first hour ticked away. It became easy for the students to adapt the Box Step and Turning Box Step to the tempo of the Rumba. During the last 20 minutes, Lani and I taught the Parallel Breaks and then had the students combined all three syllabi into a danceable combination. A happy bunch they were as we concluded the first lesson into the Waltz and Rumba.

Friday night wasn't a good night to venture out in Hawaii Kai because of the rain. But I had targeted Star Struck Studio Valentine Dance for picture taking. So wet as it was, I was there at the studio a bit late but was welcomed by John and Alicia Aros (studio owners and professional dance teachers). I was glad to see my students Hans and Yoko there too since I had announced this event to my students at Kaiser CSA.

It was a nice but small crowd and the atmosphere was inviting. Chatted a little with John, and Hans and Yoko before they left. Before I left to walk in the rain, I got to dance the East Coast Swing with Alicia.

Latin Festival Coming in March

Whenever I hear "Latin Festival", I visualize couples dancing the romantic rumba bolero, the sizzling samba, the energetic cha cha, the mesmerizing mambo salsa, and even the fun loving merengue. Well here's your chance to do some "cachi cachi" or as Charo calls it "cuchi cuchi" on the dance floor. Hawaii Gardenia Circle is hosting "Latin Festival" on Friday March 12. Starting the Spring2010Session and Mr. & Mrs. Valentine

Monday night and our first Spring 2010 Session started at Ali'iolani CSA with the Foxtrot and West Coast Swing. We had some returnees and some young people enrolled for this class. It was a good balance of experience and freshness. I think Lani and I got this class started pretty good in the Foxtrot but the students had much more fun learning the West Coast Swing. This morning (Tuesday), Lani, Tiare, and I headed for the Seniors Valentine Dance at the Blaisdel Center. Our dance student and friend Harry and his wife Maryann were representing the Koko Head Seniors Club as Mr. and Mrs. Valentine. There were 39 senior citizens organizations participating in this event and the exhibition hall was filled with a field of red shirts and dresses. The Royal Hawaiian Band played some sweet music for dancing. Other times, piped in music played on to fill in. Even had the mayor belt out a couple of tunes for our pleasure to hear and dance. Country line dancing dominated the front and back of the dance floor with the Electric Slide, the Macarena, the Mambo, the Chicken Dance, and the Shuffle. Social dancing was sandwiched in between but there was ample room for dancing. This year, Kapolei Middle School provide the ballrooom dancers to entertain the Seniors. It was a delight to see such young boys and girls dance with confidence as they took a senior as a partner on the dance floor. The Waltz, the Foxtrot, the Jitterbug, the Hustle, the Rumba (Bolero), the Cha Cha, the Mambo, the Samba, and the Merengue. It was all there to savor.

Tonight, at Koko Head Elementary School, our Dance Hawaii Kai class held our fourth Tuesday on the Waltz and the Rumba. Lani and I taught a new Waltz syllabus and then reviewed the other previous six patterns to form into a combination for the students to dance in the LOD. Took a bit of going over but worked really well at the end of the first hour. We did the same for the Rumba...teaching a new syllabus and then reviewing the previous four patterns to form a combination for the students to dance. Worked out really well too for our students.

Valentine Dance @StarStruck Studio

StarStruck Studio, the only privately owned dance studio in Hawaii Kai is hosting a Valentine Dance on Friday, Feb. 12 at the studio located at 805 Ahukini St. The event is open to the public. So if you want to do some dancing on that weekend but not in the mood for driving all the way to the Palladium, then StarStruck is a good alternative. The studio has wooden floors so it's comfortable for Ballroom, Latin, and Swing dancing. More Dancing In February with Featured Performances

Beating on the HOT trail after the Dance Aliamanu 1st Anniversary & Charity Ball, and Al Franz Showcase at the Pacific Beach Hotel last month comes more dancing with featured performances in February.

Starting off with WAM on February 6. Check it out with Jill Tengan, Ballroom Dance Advisor at Moanalua High School. Jill is also an active dance instructor for Dance Aliamanu.

Then there's the Waikiki Community Center Annual Spring Dance on February 26. Gayle Kawahakui who is also an active dance instructor for Dance Aliamanu is spearheading this event. Give her a call if you need more info or tickets.

Our friends at International Ballroom Dance, Inc. is hosting their 2010 Inaugural Ball on February 27. It's gonna fall on a Saturday at the Pacific Beach Hotel, so I gotta warn you to get there early. Nevah can tell if the Waikiki guys gonna have another Sunset On The Beach or some big event that gonna cause the hotel parking structure to be all filled up.

On a passing note, here's one worth mentioning 'cause it's sponsored by the City & County of Honolulu....The Parks & Recreation Valentine Dance on February 13 at the Palladium. Get this...starts at about 5:30 and ends at 10PM in Ballroom 1 & 2. Don't know the admission but that's a whole four and a half hours of dancing if you got the legs and stamina for it. Main thing...have fun!

Did Al Have The Magic Touch @The Al Franz Showcase?

I think Al did 'cause he pulled out a very successful showcase this past Saturday at the Pacific Beach Hotel. With all the happenings going on on Saturday..Preview of "Lost" at Sunset On The Beach at Waikiki, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce Narcissus Coronation, and other weekend big events, he was able to garner the hotel's recommended amount of dancers to attend his Showcase.
Lani and I got there a bit early 'cause we knew that parking would be a premium with "Sunset On The Beach" fans gonna take up most of the spaces in the parking structure. True to my thinking, it happened. Okay, it's 5:15 and the doors to the ballroom won't be open till 6PM. Fortunately for us, the name Gayle Kawahakui who sold us the tickets has some pull to it. We were escorted in to our table while the showcase performers were ironing out some rough spots in their dance. Got to meet Calvin and Debra Ota as they waited their turn to use the floor. Also met some long time acquaintances from our spell with IBDC (now IBDI).

As 6PM approached, more dancers and spectators started to fill the ballroom while the specially selected music by Al Franz played. Didn't take long for everyone to get into the mood for dancing. Al's barkering may have helped too.

Okay these hard working guys and gals hardly get recognition for what they do to make the showcase a success, too. That's the Frontline people... the guys and gals who greet the ticket holders at the reception table, the MC's (well maybe they do get some applauses), and the music players who have no official name (so they said you can call us "High Intensity"). A well deserved name since they have been playing dancing music for Al for 13 years.
Buffet dinner at 7PM right on schedule take or add 15 minutes. Gonna skip the menu specifically selected by Al Franz. But I gotta mention even without the chicken, everything was ono, especially the salmon, the sashime, and miso butter fish.
There were several professional and non-professional dance instructors in the attendance but Al made known that the "Sherlock Holmes" (Geoffrey Fells)of professional competitive dancing was in the audience...so to watch out on the heel and toe placements.
It was Showtime featuring Albert Franz, His Students, and Guest Performers. There were two parts to this showcase with General Dancing during the intermission. The whole event moved like clockwork. There were no delays with waiting for the next performer to get on the floor or those long excessive bowing. As soon as one couple got off the dance floor, the next couple entered without any ballyhoo. I gotta mention that because Al was in nearly all the performances, a second MC took over and he was well seasoned...great voice and explicit but brief introduction of the performers.
Like the ono entries that Pacific Beach Hotel puts out, I'm not gonna dwell on who performed only that the Showcase was very entertaining, very well performed by the dancers, and the long hours of practice was evident in their performance. They all deserved the loud applauses and whistles that ehoed throughout the ballroom. So with all that said here are the 2010 Albert Franz Showcase performers.......

East Honolulu Got Dancing

Dance Hawaii Kai at Koko Head Elementary School went into their second week with the Waltz and Rumba for Absolute Beginners this past Tuesday. As last week's students trickled into the cafeteria more new faces followed. Thanks to Stanley Akamine who volunteered to handle the registration which brought in 11 more students tonight to make it a total of 21 on the roster. Also, Stanley filled in to dance with the ladies without partners which was a mighty big help to Lani and me.

This past Monday, Dance Honolulu started their Spring Session at Washington Middle School at 6PM with the Country Line Dance taught by Kevin and Margaret Yee, the West Coast Swing taught by Cullen and Cheryl Chong, and the Waltz taught by Robert and Vanelle Hirayasu. Lani and I dropped by to watch the ballroom dance classes but found ourselves mixing with the students as partner to the ladies without partners. All six are excellent instructors and can sure make learning to dance a fun thing for the students.

East Honolulu under the Dance Aliamanu flagship have a good core of American style dance instructors in this area. Most of the time the guy instructor does most of the talking when teaching a pattern while the lady instructor waits silently. I gotta say that from my observation this isn't the case with Cheryl, Lani, Margaret, and Vanelle. These gals can grab the bull by the horn and teach just as equally well as the guys by words and demonstration. Fo' sure!

So if you missed going to this extravaganza on January 15 at the Pacific Beach Hotel and want to see what transpired and why it was a hit for this new dance organization, just surf the wave over the Internet to YouTube and type in Dance Aliamanu first Anniversary. Then after watching the videos and you like what you see, and when you see Mike and Lorrie at the Palladium or at the Mall show them your appreciation with the shaking Shaka sign. Dancing and Dim Sum

Unusual time for me to get up at 8 AM on Saturday morning but Lani had reserved seatings for this morning's Sterling & Tucker Annual Client Appreciation Seminar at the Ala Moana Hotel. Good thing they served Continental breakfast with some fresh fruits otherwise my hungry stomach would have rumbled like a motorcycle thoughout the duration of the three hour talks.

The Lung Kong Physical Culture Club opened the program with the Chinese Lion Dance which was appropriate since the theme of the seminar was "Kung Hee Fat Choy". Ever watch the guys under the Lion's head move to the beat of the heavy drums? Kinda like the Paso Doble or Tango dancers...lots of movement to the rhythm.
The seminar was interesting with lots of tips on how to lower your taxes, make your money work for you, funeral management kine stuff and so forth. After the talks, everyone rushed out to the staging area where dim sum was served on four separate tables. I guess everyone was hungry cause there were no organized lines....just a rumble of a big hungry crowd converging on the food tables.

Anyway, during the Dim Sum break, several dancers from the Phoenix Dance Chamber performed on stage for our entertainment. There were five groups and each group danced their interpretation of the different cultures of China. The movements of the dancers were flowing like a silk scarf riding the current of the soft wind. Very soft and dramatic. It was enjoyable to watch this cultural kind of dance performance with a nice change to Chinese music. Applauses were loud after each group performance and I think the SRO audience enjoyed it, too.

Dance Aliamanu Social This Saturday

Dance Hawaii Kai opened at Koko Head Elementary School this past Tuesday with Absolute Beginners Social Waltz and Rumba. Thanks to Maurice and Gilda Morita for coming all the way from Aliamanu to do the registration. As with all our dance classes, Lani and I teach aerobic exercises associated with the dance lesson. It helps train the leg muscles and breathing.

Fundraiser For WAM

Dance Aliamanu has taken the lead in helping our public schools by donating proceeds from dance classes and social events to the schools that opens their doors to Dance Aliamanu. Now we have one of Dance Aliamanu's talented instructors spearheading a fundraiser for WAM (Waipahu and Moanalua High School Ballroom Dance Clubs). See poster for more info. It's a worthy cause to benefit our high school students at the two schools. Jill has a request but let her letter say it. My name is Jill Tengan and I am the advisor of Moanalua High School's Ballroom Dance Club. My club will be performing at our annual fundraiser coming up on February 6th and I am trying to get real ballroom dance shoes for my girl performers. Lynn Nakamura and Henrietta Muramoto have generously donated a number of pairs of standard and latin shoes that they are not using anymore, but I still need a few more pairs. Specifically, I have some girls who range between Size 8 and 9 who still need shoes. Doug & Jackie Miranda Workshop In East Honolulu

The pulsating sounds of music had several line dancing enthusiasts stepping, cha-cha-ing, and grapevining in unison. Doug and Jackie Miranda conducted a series workshops at Club 100, Palladium and Manoa Valley Recreation Center.

With enthusiasm, wit, charm and grace, Doug and Jackie succeeded in teaching several line dances to the eager dancers. They encouraged each one to feel the music, incorporate one's own style or pizzazz, and most of all have fun, fun, fun. They were entertaining, had lots of energy and provided an exciting and lively event.

Doug and Jackie who dazzled the audiences with several exhibition numbers are world-renowned choreographers of popular line dance numbers. They also produce and dance in their own night club revues in Tennessee.

Lani and I finally got to meet Calvin and his beautiful wife and dance partner Debra, persona a persona. Very nice and friendly couple. This was at the Dance Aliamanu 1st Anniversary & Charity Ball and unfortunately Lani and I were just about leaving the ballroom on our way home. But fortunately, this is just the first of many "Balls" and Showcases that is scheduled for this year and we are bound to meet pesona a persona, again.

Many of our long ago acquaintances and dance students from our stint at HBDA were in attendance also. Notables were Nobu Oshiro who with her late husband Sid were our Supervisors, James and Mae who were the Senior Lead Instructors at Waialae Chapter, Tom and Bunnie who faithfully assisted us at Hawaii Kai Chapter, and some of our present and former CSA students. We are glad that the students have progress to a higher level of dancing as seen at the "Ball" and enjoying this wonderful sport of partner dancing.

We had a very successful weekend, first a "successful Dance Aliamanu 1st Anniversary & Charity Ball" on Friday night, Jan. 15th, at the Pacific Beach Hotel. We had 44 tables sold with ten on a table for a total of 440 members, friends, family, professional instructors, and other dance organizations including our friends from the Kauai and Big Island of Hawaii. We appreciated the support from the dance community. The comments were execllent (from the food to the dance routines by our dance club members and celebrities). Lynn & Richard Nakamura played a major role by getting the celebrities, and choreographing their dance routines with our instructors, doing the program with Cheryl Chong, table seating assignments, the MC's Karl & Kalene Sakamoto, and many more. To Millie Chun, Cora Nieto, and Elsie McGrew for taking care of the outstanding stage and table decorations and the many more helpers that came out in force on Friday morning to help set up. A big THANK YOU to Millie & Arnold Chun for their outstanding job! To Junie Sato who took care of the leis and award gifts to the celebrities. To the Raffle Door Prize gang of Gilda Morita, Leilani Alcover and Daisy Lee who raised $612.00 for our school sites.To all the Reception Table volunteers and we made the men dress in sport coats, they looked good! To Michael Chinen who played outstanding dance music throughout the night to 11:30 p.m. The crowd stayed to dance the night away. To Soon Lee for taking care of the bills as our Treasurer. You can't keep the dancers away who ate all the ono food (thank you to our members and friends for the potluck), and danced the night away till 10 p.m. Another great showing for Dance Aliamanu! THANKS to Music DJ Michael Chinen who continued to play outstanding dance music.

Smashing Hit @Dance Aliamanu 1st Anniversary & Charity Ball

Some say "Practice makes Perfect". And I believe all dancers agree with that axiom but I gotta add "Expect the Unexpected". The encore dress rehearsal from 4 to 5:30 PM at the Pacific Beach Hotel was just the last ride to perfecting the dance showcase that was about to come later in the evening. I think the practice went smoothly but if the unexpected can happen to Professional dancers, it can most likely happen to non-professional dancers performing in a showcase.....something like the lady's heel getting caught in the hem of her skirt. Okay, if you were at the "Ball", you'd know what I mean.

Doors were opened at 5:30 and general dancing filled the foor almost immediately. Who could deny the upbeat music of our DJ Michael Chinen, whose selection of dancing music hits the top of the chart. Our MCs for the evening were tops, too....no dull presentations. I guess you can call it "commando" since their presentation kept everyone on their toes. Maybe being a Circuit Court Judge, and being in Marketing and Sales have a lot to do with knowing what can hold the audience interest. All three personalities did an excellent job on the front line.

I won't go into the food stuff since every dancer who has visited the Pacific Beach Hotel for dance showcases knows what kind of ono spread awaits them. But I gotta mention that Dance Aliamanu did not skimp, not by a long shot. Too much entries for such a short time for performing dancers to savor before the show. For starters, Kim Anderson sang a prayer, Invocation by Cheryl Chong. Then after dinner, Dance Aliamanu President Maurice Morita gave a "Welcome Address". Introduction of Celebrities and VIPs, and Special Guests (various dance club officers, and professional dance studio owners) followed.

It was SHOWTIME with first introducing all of Dance Aliamanu team of instructors. Dance Aliamanu Instructors' Tango Dance variations was first on the agenda as eight couples danced the American Tango, Argentine Tango, Filipino Tango, and the International Tango to the same music. (Sorry no photos since Lani and I were one of the couples in this number. Maybe some camera person will send me one for this blog). After the Tango, Kim Anderson sang a powerful rendition of "Don't Rain On My Parade".

Part 1 continued with Dance Aliamanu's American Rumba & Cha Cha Medley with nine couples dancing in unison to a slow tempo Rumba then picking up the speed of the Cha Cha.

The visiting Kauai Ballroom Dance Club followed with the American Waltz. A well choreographed dance featuring five couples from the Lihue Chapter. They are a welcome sight and a good addition to this Showcase.

Ending Part 1 was Dance Aliamanu's Jive & Quickstep Medley featuring six couples dancing some fancy and fast footwork. Great job by the choreographers.

General dancing during the intermission and President Maurice Morita took the opportunity to donate proceeds from the ticket sales to the five schools that opened their doors for Dance Aliamanu to hold dance classes and social dancing. Awards were also given to honor dance instructors and officers who volunteered their time to progress Dance Aliamanu in the direction and position the organization is today.

The Celebrities Showcase started with Melveen Leed dancing the International Cha Cha with Richard Nakamura. "Da Tita" was in full showmanship form as she wowed the audience with her entertaining mastery.

Pretty Liana Green Wright & Robert Hirayasu danced the right stuff in keeping up with the upbeat tempo. Dancing Mambo #5 showed her high energy limits which is unlimited.

Michele Choy, the only VIP in this showcase, danced a smooth Night Club 2 Step with Cullen Chong. She performed like a well disciplined student of dance as she followed Cullen gracefully around the floor.

Micah Banks, the only male Celebrity, in this showcase danced the International Jive with Jill Tengan. It was an entertaining performance with Micah interacting with a "I love to dance" girl. Good script.

Kim Anderson, singer, actress, and now showcase dancer. What else can I say about this volatile pretty young lady with multi-talent who danced with Joshua Manzano the International Rumba. (Wish I had a better pix of Kim).

Concluding Part 2 was Kehaulani Christian dancing the International Quickstep with Richard Nakamura. Kehaulani danced a sultry number before getting into a closed hold with Richard. This pretty young lady also showed that she can keep up with Richard's speed on the Quickstep.

General dancing continued till 11:30PM. And that's a wrap of a successful Anniversary Showcase for Dance Aliamanu, thanks to President Maurice Morita, the Dance Aliamanu officers, the volunteers of the event who did the setup at the hotel ballroom, the ticket sales committee and reception desk ladies, the dance instructors and dancers, the choreographers, the VIP/Celebrities, Mike the music player, the MCs, especially to Richard & Lynn Nakamura who were the guiding spear for this wonderful 1st Anniversary Ball, and to the 430 guests/dancers who came to celebrate and enjoy this smashing hit event.

Doug & Jackie’s “Fun”shop on Saturday and Sunday was fun to the max.

(Workshop was held at the 100 Battalion Club House) There were smiles galore and lots of learning going on.

Doug & Jackie not only taught dance steps, they taught style and arm motions.
They demoed dances and gave mini-performances. Wonderful job.

It's been a long number of years since Lani and I participated in group dance routines or solo dance exhibitions. So gearing up for the Dance Aliamanu 1st Anniversary & Charity Ball took big time effort at least for me to get into the rhythm of the Tango group routine. For Lani, it's no pressure since all she has to do is follow my lead and apply her styling which she does very well.

Well, everyone showed up for the rehearsal...the MCs, the music player, the VIPs and Celebrities, the singer, the dance instructors, and all the dancers of the various group routines and solo exhibitions. Each group rehearsed at least three times and their performances got better and better each time. The rehearsal was very well organized without any hitch, thanks to the hard work by Richard and Lynn Nakamura. There's one final rehearsal at the Pacific Beach Hotel then it's SHOWTIME.

Not sure if there are anymore tickets available for the Anniversary & Charity Ball since 400 tickets have already been sold but no harm in checking with Maurice at (cell) 225-0326 if more tables have been added for this event.

Harry Comes Of Age At 75

WOW! What a night of exciting entertainment, burn the floor dancing, association with friends and new friends, and onolicious entries. But before I go into the main show, I gotta welcome the birthday boy to the Three Quarter Century Club since I'm his senior by a (ahem) year or (ahem) so just as long as Harry Martinucci will keep in mind the motto of the makule guys as the journey to 100 gets a little closer...."There May Be Snow On The Roof But There's Still A Lot Of Fire In The Basement".

Lani and I were invited to Harry's birthday celebration at the Elks Club in Waikiki hosted by his wife Maryann and children Steven and Jean this past Wednesday. A lot of Harry and Maryann's friends were in attendance.

And the Entertainer's Entertainer Augie Rey with multi-talented musicians Bobby King on guitar, and Dennis Graue on keyboard provided rich entertainment and danceable dancing music. So enticing was the first Rumba music, that Lani and I were drawn to the dance floor. Others were drawn to the dance floor when the good old Swing music echoed throughout the room.

Harry and Maryann got the floor heated up for others to join them in the Swing. Then the Cha Cha Cha brought the next wave of dancers to the floor. During the whole evening, Augie got everyone involved with the entertainment singing and dancing.

What a beautiful singing voice Maryann has as she sang a love song to Harry accompanied by her talented son Steven on the guitar. Augie commented that she should be on "American Idol".

The talent didn't stop there. Daughter Jean belted out "Route 66" with Augie that wowed the audience as much as her mom's singing.

Augie did a little "Satchamo" interpretation. It was terrifico! Then the microphone was handed to each guest to say a joke. There were a few but most everyone wished Harry a Happy Birthday and more to come.

More dancing followed.....the Electric Slide, slow dancing, and even the Conga Line Dance. But Swing, Rumba, and Cha Cha were the favorite dances including free style disco. Got my share of dancing with the ladies (Lani, Tiare, Yvonne) on my table and with Maryann, Jean, Stacy (Steven's main squeeze), and a young cutie who danced a mixture of swing and free style disco.
It was a very enjoyable night of great entertainment, guests participation, and hot, hot dancing that moves the soul.

Here's the schedule for the CSA dance classes. All classes are from 7 to 9 PM. Registration for the CSA classes are Jan.9-21 at Kaimuki CSA or Kaiser CSA. Tuition Fee is $40 pp for 10 week/2 hrs. CSA dance classes are for Beginners to Advanced dancers.

At Koko Head Elementary School, Dance Hawaii Kai dance classes are 7 to 9 PM for Absolute Beginners Waltz and Rumba starting on January 19. Registration is at 6:30 PM on that day. Membership is $5.00 for January to December 2010. Fee is $10.00 for both classes and will run for 8 weeks. All monies collected for the dance classes will be donated to Koko Head Elementary School.

There was lots of singing and dancing (line & partner) plus dance performances by The Eclectics (Ron Yasuda, Marian Bernal, Sam Yong, Lisa Tokunaga, Mark Bryant, and Sandy Zook).

The evening started with waltz. Lani Sierra taught "Waltz Across Texas" to a group of line dancers in the back of the room while Sandy and Mark reviewed waltz steps with a group of partners in the front of the room. The music came on and people either danced or sat at their seats and sang along to "Away in the Manger" and "Silent Night".

The dancers got a small break while The Eclectics performed a waltz to "Let There Be Peace On Earth".

Afterwards, nearly everyone got up on the dance floor and Sandy taught two line dances to "Here Comes Santa" and "Winter Wonderland" followed by another performance to "Frosty Snowman" and a Viennese Waltz to "Let It Be Christmas" while the audience sang along.

Then there was swing. Lani and Sam taught line dancing in the back and Mark and Sandy reviewed East Coast Swing for the partners. This was followed by a swing performance to "Rockin A Round Christmas Tree".

Next the Cha Cha. Who can resist. Nearly everyone got up on the dance floor and either did line dancing or partner dancing.
For the grand finale, the Eclectics did a musical Christmas story to a medley of 9 dances. There was waltz, cha cha, 2step, swing routines, line dances, and more. The audience had a booklet of lyrics to help them sing along.

I think the party was a great success with everyone hugging and wishing their neighbor a Merry Christmas.

On New Year's Eve 2009

Here's the latest scoop on Dance Hawaii Kai start date. Because of the time needed for dance exhibition rehearsals for the upcoming Dance Aliamanu 1st Anniversary & Charity Ball on January 15, the instructors decided to start on January 19 after the Ball. More info at: www.dance-aliamanu.org.

So where were we on New Year eve? Lani and I joined some friends for dinner and dance at the Waikiki Yacht Club. Good turn out with lots of young people but a lot more seniors. Dined with some friends of our host from the Big Island Kona, New York, Michigan, and Tahiti. Appetizer stuffed spinach mushrooms and the asparagus soup were good to tease the appetite. Main meal lobster tail with melted butter, diced red rose potato, and breaded veggie came a bit later. Just onolicious concluding with mixed berries fruit cup, mocha cheesecake and coffee. There were other entries but this meal was filling enough for us. Now to the dancing. The first group was a guitar player with synthesizer and a singer. Mostly ballad stuff and not much for dancing.

The second group played non-stop rock and roll music of the 70's. Reminded me of when my teenage son played in a band in the early 70's music like the Clearwater Revival guys. Not much for partner dancing except for one or two EC Swing. Boogie dancing was king for the night since it was a no-holds type dancing with lots of do-it-by-yourself gyration. (I gave it a try at least once just for the sport of it). Not real dancing but the younger generation loved it. The music was very loud; sounded like the rock band was trying to compete with fireworks explosion bursting in the night sky at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Most of the seniors had moved far away from the dance floor by then. It was a new New Year's experience for Lani and me but one that we'll gladly leave behind with all the woes of 2009.
Anyway, we're looking forward to a better year in 2010. Hope you are, too.

Tango... The Dance That Expresses Love and Hate

Can the International style Tango, the Argentine Tango, the Filipino Tango, and the American style Tango be danced with the same tempo music? Eight couples met at Radford HIgh School yesterday (Sunday) to choose the Tango music that would be compatible to all four dance styles. The music chosen is upbeat and stimulating with heavy drama. Richard and Lynn Nakamura is spearheading this "let's show the audience the different styles of Tango that is offered by Dance Hawaii" showcase with valuable assistance from two well known showcase performers Reggie Gascon and Gayle Kawahakui.
All for fun and entertainment and dancing at the same time, there will be four couples on the International Tango, two couples on the American Tango, one couple on the Filipino Tango, and one couple on the Argentine Tango. Can they all dance with the same tempo music? Well, we'll find out for sure come January 15 at the Dance Aliamanu 1st Anniversary & Charity Ball.

Dance Aliamanu Insructors Gets Feted

This past Tuesday night Dance Aliamanu honored their dance instructors with a 7-course Christmas dinner at the Imperial Chinese Restaurant at Pearlridge. Along with Dance Aliamanu President Maurice Morita and lovely wife Gilda, there were about 41 in attendance. Not all of them instructors but well wishers for another successful year for this growing dance organization. In less than a year, Dance Aliamanu has stretched out from its homebase in the Salt Lake area to Kaneohe (Kapunahala Elementary), Honolulu (Washington Middle), and Hawaii Kai (Koko Head Elementary).

Lani and I are new to this organization knowing only a handful of instructors from our stint with HBDA. But we sat at a table where we got acquainted with some new faces (Larry & Candace, and Eddie & Wally, and Jim B.), and Maurice & Gilda, and Andy & Monica Pascua.

After dinner (which incidently was so delicious that there was nothing left on our table to doggy bag and take home), and when everyone was settled, Maurice gave a short speech on the direction Dance Aliamanu was headed into the new year.

He then introduced all the dance instructors and thanked them for volunteering their time for past services and for being there in the coming year. He also recognized our music DJs Michael Chinnen and Andy Pascua, and Derrick and Kieko for designing the instructors' shirts.

Stan and Maurice were the photographers last night. I was the elusive paparazzo snapping away with my little digital cam at anyone that talks and breaths as I went table-hopping meeting new faces. It was a good night for getting together with the other instructors, also.

Dance Hawaii Kai opens with the two dances that draw the most dancers to the hardwood floor; the Waltz and the Rumba on Tuesday January 12, 2010, 7PM at Koko Head Elementary School. More on this later.

Dancing The 3rd Week Of December

A Visit With Doug Kessler
It's Monday and the start of a new week. Got a call from Doug Kessler in the afternoon. No, in fact he was returning my call that I made earlier. Okay, every dancer on this island knows the dancing maestro who puts on the most exciting, entertaining and well received dance showcases at least two times a year. Arrangement was made to visit the studio for a few photo shoot. I stopped by the Keep On Dancing Studio at 7 PM where Mr Kessler holds his classes. Of course, there was a motive for my visit. My son, Nick and his partner Junie were going to be there for dance lessons, and I also wanted to meet Doug Kessler in person. So there I was watching the maestro teach the Cha Cha, the Samba, and the Rumba. You gotta be impressed with Doug Kessler and his teaching method. He teaches steps, musicality, styling and theory with each lesson and with patience. What a deal if you ever want to learn how to dance from one of the well-known professional dance teachers in the islands. More on Doug Kessler when I get the announcement of his upcoming Mardi Gras showcase in March 2010.

Lani takes a Crash Course in Country Line Dancing
Yes, you read right. Lani took a crash course in the Country Waltz, Cha Cha, and the Swing to assist Sandy Zook in the Christmas showcase at Kahala Nui just 24 hours before showtime.

The Kahala Nui Christmas Party featuring Sandy Zook and The Eclectics in a showcase with dancing and singing was held on Friday afternoon in the Diamond Head Rooom. The room was packed with Seniors and guests at the Senior Living. It was an enjoyable and entertaining afternoon with Seniors joining in on the Country Line Dances at one end of the room and partner dancing on the main stage.

I won't go too heavy on this event because Sandy promises a cover story on this blog soon. So I'm just gonna sneak a photo of the Choreographer Sandy Zook and The Eclectics. Stay tuned.

Friday night, John and Alicia of Star-Struck Dance Studio in Hawaii Kai invited me to their studio Christmas Party. I got there a little early for the party but in time to observe their students learning the Hustle from Alicia. Good basic steps for any beginning dancer. The studio was well decorated with the Christmas spirit and there were refreshments laid out for the party. General dancing started after the group lesson. John and Alicia hosts free dance lessons at Koko Marina Center Courtyard on the first Friday of each month. Checkout their website for more info.

Dance Aliamanu As A Flag Ship Will Be No More Come 2010

But before I light the BlockBuster, here's what's been happening during the second week of December. The dance instructors meeting to plan the 2010 Dance Schedule was held at Aliamanu Elementary School on Tuesday December 8. President Maurice had the agenda, calendar of events, and the list of dances that will be offered; International, American, and Night Club styles printed and distributed to the instructors. There were a lot more instructors for the organization than I had imagined. After Maurice gave a short welcoming speech, each instructor introduced themselves and named their specialty.
Presently, Flag Ship Dance Aliamanu have four locations. Dance Aliamanu has American style dance classes on Tuesday evenings at Aliamanu Elementary School, and International style dance classes on Thursday evenings at Aliamanu Middle School.
Dance Kaneohe has International style dance classes on Monday evenings at Kapunahala Elementary School. Dance Honolulu has American style dance classes on Monday evenings at Washington Middle School.
In January 2010, Dance Hawaii Kai will open American style dance classes at Koko Head Elementary School. And soon to join in 2010 are Waipahu, and Mililani.
Dances to be taught beginning in January 2010 are: International styles Foxtrot, Tango, Cha Cha, and Samba; and American styles Waltz, West Coast Swing, Tango, Rumba, Mambo, Filipino Tango, Argentine Tango, and Line Dance.
New instructors joining Dance Aliamanu are Stefanus Gunawan, Tanya Somday, and Frank and Lani Sierra.

Thursday night at Aliamanu Middle School, Kevin and Margaret Yee took over teaching the 62 count Cha Cha Line Dance while Andy and Monica are on vacation. A good turnout again. Kevin and Margaret did the breakdown of all the steps which made it easier for the dancers to execute the movements. James was a big help in assisting Kevin and Margaret during the one hour lesson.
Richard and Lynn came on the following hour for the Jive class. Nice moves with good tempo and musicality. Also good styling especially on the Toe Heel syllabus.

What A Week It Has Been!

Lani and I concluded our last dance class for this Fall Session on Monday at Ali'iolani CSA on the Cha Cha and the Jitterbug, two HHSAA Football Championship games at the Aloha Stadium, introduction of New Cha Cha Line Dance by Andy and Monica at Dance Aliamanu, USA Dance Classic Holiday Ball featuring the Diamond Head Theater Shooting Stars preshowing before the showcase of up and coming top amateur ballroom couple Marco Camarlenghi and Martina Minasi at the Palladium, and StarStruck Dance Studio first monthly free dance lessons at Koko Marina Center with certified professional dance instructors John and Alicia Aros. Lani and I topped off the Cha Cha with the Circle Breaks and Shoulder Check ending with the Half Moon pattern. I think the students loved the combination because they kept on dancing well into the first 15 minutes of the second hour. After a short recess and review of the previous Jitterbug patterns, Lani and I taught the Travelling Swivels, and Shoulder Check with Touch The Back Tuck ending. With Rock Around The Clock blaring and the students having fun dancing, it was hard for me to call it a night after the nine o'clock quitting time.

Maurice Morita, President of Dance Aliamanu e-mailed me that Andy and Monica were going to teach a new extended version of the Cha Cha Line Dance at Aliamanu Middle School on Thursday. Regardless of the heavy rains and strong winds, Lani and I decided to venture again into Central Oahu. It was a good turnout for there were others who braved the not-so-nice weather. The new Cha Cha version has some good Latin variations which are in tune with the music and dance. It should be a hit on the dance floor at the Dance Aliamanu 1st Anniversary and Charity Ball in January.

As for the USA Dance Classic Holiday Ball, Guest Authors Ravi and Synthia have a terrific first hand audience reaction on Marco and Martina's peformances in Dancing In The Dark blog. After reading that blog, scroll down to "Talk To The Animals" at the Honolulu Zoo blog. It's happening this Sunday (Dec. 6). Ravi sez that admission is $4 pp as you enter at the exit gate; the entrance gate will be closed.

Friday evening rolled in and thank goodness no heavy rain..in fact no rain at all..just strong cold winds and every other thing that happened on Friday. Football games, big shindig at the Palladium, and of course the weather. Met John and Alica Aros at the Koko Marina Center Courtyard for the StarStruck Dance Studio Demo and free dance lessons. Enticing Latin music was blaring over the speakers for this first Friday of the month event. I guess with all the other events going on, the turnout was low but that did not hamper the instructors and students spirit. Three of my dance students, two students of StarStruck Studio, and a couple of walk-by ladies joined in for the free Mambo and Rumba dance lessons.

John and Alicia Aros demonstrated the basic steps as they taught the Mambo during the first hour and then the Rumba during the second hour. John and Alicia will be giving free dance lessons on the first Friday of each month at the Koko Marina Center Courtyard. For more info please log on their website at www.starstruck-studio.com.

Fantastico! Grandioso! Eccellente! Splendido!

That was the Italian translation of the audience reaction to the exhibition by Marco Camarlenghi and Martina Minasi last night at the USA Dance Classic Holiday Ball.

I overheard many members of the audience say this was quite possibly one of the best shows they had ever seen in Hawaii either by a Professional or Amateur dance couple.

The evening started with a Christmas show by the Fabulous Diamond Head Theatre Shooting Stars. This was immediately followed by Marco and Martina's 5-dance show. This young couple is making their first appearance in the United States. It was a rare sight to see the entire ballroom give a standing ovation and shout out hana hou. The couple obliged with an encore Foxtrot performance.

I am writing this in case anyone who missed the performance would like to get a last chance at seeing them today, Saturday December 5th at the International Tango workshop they will be teaching at the Palladium from 1 to 3 p.m. Cost is $20 for USA Dance members and $30 for non-members.

It is pretty obvious that this couple will be rising to the top of the international scene in the next few years and those of us who saw them last night can say - "We were the first in the USA to see them !"

Dance Fever, Filipino Tango, and Potluck

This past Tuesday concluded the final lessons on the Filipino Tango for this session. Earlier, Richard and Elsie finished the Rumba review. Then it was potluck time. What a large spread of onolicious delicasies. All kinds of food that reminded me of the Filipino parties in the plantation camps.

During the break, the dance instructors for this session were honored and lei-ed. Dance Aliamanu President presented the newly designed instructors polo shirts (see photo of Kevin and Margaret). Left click mouse on graphic/caption to zoom in.

There were more new faces again for the Filipino Tango even at this fifth lesson. Andy an Monica demonstrated the four blocks that we had learned previously. Then it was time for the students to dance all four patterns with music. Before going into the pattern for the fifth block, there was a Q&A session to clarify any movements that needed it. On to the fifth pattern: The Cuddle and the Armlock variations that is familiar to Swing and most of the Latin dances with hand changes and triple spins were just the sweet taste to whet our appetite to learn more of this fascinating dance. Hopefully, Dance Aliamanu have it on their 2010 schedule with Andy and Monica.

The Jim Nabors Show - A Family Treat !

We watched the preview of the Jim Nabors Christmas show at the Hawaii Theatre last night. Awesome is the word that comes to mind. Perfomers ranged in age from single digit to pretty close to triple digits.

There is something for everyone in this show - young, old or young-at-heart! Starting with live music by the Hawaii Theatre Orchestra under the musical direction of the multi-talented Matt Catingub, this show was entertaining all around with local celebrities Jimmy Borges, Guy Merola, Emma Veary, Karen Keawehawaii and of course Mr. Jim Nabors himself. He still has a great voice and tells pretty good stories despite a new liver, a pacemaker, knee and eye surgeries. A real inspiration for all performers !

There were vocals, tap, hula, some very funny moments from Philip Huber and the Huber Marionettes. There were solos, duets and a finale with the entire cast of 100+ including the Diamond Head Theatre Shooting Stars, La Pietra Select Choir, Hula Halau Ka Pa Hula O Ka Lei Lehua, Hawaii Theatre Ensemble Singers. There is also a segment where the audience is invited to sing-along with the performers to live music.

Too many chicken-skin moments to list ! If there is one show to take the whole family from ages 4 to 104 to enjoy the Christmas spirit, here is one we recommend.

There are only 3 performances - first show opens on Friday evening (day after Thanksgiving), one Saturday evening show, and closes with a Sunday matinee.

Talk To The Animals

Cruising The Third Week of November

Aloha Students of Dance. I hope you were able to take in all those mellow news by Calvin, June, Maile, and of course da mysterious Specter on the links to this blogsite. I've been laying low for awhile but not too low that I'm out of touch. I gotta thank Ravi and Synthia for their contribution to the Dancing In The Dark blogsite on The Festival of Lights, and the upcoming Diamond Head Theater Christmas With Jim Nabors. They are pretty much connected with the Diamond Head Theater Shooting Stars, the USA Dance Organization, and the Lotus dancers. So stay tuned for more happening from them.

This past Sunday, Lani and I cruised over to Radford HS to observe the Dance Aliamanu Showcase practice choreographed by Andy and Monica. We were invited to participate with the eight couples but with such a short time to pick up the routine before the big event, we had to decline. However, it is a captivating medley and one to watch and enjoy come January 15.

Our Monday night Cha Cha and Jitterbug class went okay. Despite the strong winds and rain, we had a good turnout of students. Lani and I taught the Circle Breaks in the Cha Cha before going back to reviewing some of the previous patterns. We did the same for the Jitterbug after Lani and I taught the Shoulder Check.

Tuesday night is when Lani and I become students of Andy and Monica in the Filipino Tango. This was our 4th lesson and we were very eager to learn the Grapevine pattern that Andy and Monica had demonstrated last week. New students had shown up on this
4th week of lesson. I think it was a blessing, too, because everyone was in favor of going over the patterns in Block 2, and 3.
The Fiqure 4 leg lift, the two cross hands underarm turns became much clearer and danceable. As we progressed into the Grapevine pattern, the Filipino Tango became easier to dance with music.

The winds were pretty strong Wednesday evening as Lani and I headed for Kaiser CSA for our Foxtrot and Tango class but it was much cooler than the Wednesday before. I guess I got into the Grapevine fever from the evening before. So Lani and I taught the Grapevine pattern in the Foxtrot before reviewing some of the other patterns. The students were really into it and started to form their own combination of patterns. This was the goal that Lani and I had set for our students and it was coming into play.
Since our students were dancing the Grapevine with other patterns so well, the Grapevine fever hit me once more. What's good for the Foxtrot has gotta be good for the Tango, I thought. So Lani and I taught the Grapevine pattern in the Tango and it worked out very well with the students. (Info: The American Tango Grapevine pattern is not the same as the Filipino Tango Grapevine).

Being A Weight Watcher In Da Jitterbug

Aloha Students of Dance! It's no big secret that you gotta Watch Your Weight no matter what style of dance you're learning. So for the moment, let's talk JITTERBUG...the one that Dr. J calls it America's coolest dance. Dr. J mentions five secrets of Jitterbug success but for now let's leave the secrets where they belong....to Victoria. Here's his pitch on my top of the chart Swing Dancing.
"One thing you've got to be aware of while learning to dance is where your weight is. I don't mean the effects of a diet, or where you stashed your barbells. I mean which foot you're putting your weight on. Be conscious of where your weight is supposed to be, and how it changes from step to step. Dance is a smooth motion, and your steps should be smooth and light. If your weight is placed incorrectly, your whole body will be out of position. You won't be in place for the next step, and the move won't work. Plus, you'll throw your partner off." AUWE!
Here's two simple rules he sez to remember: "(1)When stepping, always put your weight on the leading foot (the one you've stepped with), and (2)Watch out for Godzilla Feet. Stepping is not an invitation to imitate Godzilla, stomping around the dance floor like a 40-ton prehistoric monster. When you change weight, don't plunk your feet down as if they were made of lead. Keep your weight in the front, on the balls of your feet."
Mighty good tips from Dr. J on being a Weight Watcher. He adds: The only one reason to learn Jitterbug....TO HAVE FUN!
